Phenomenal Woman

A celebration of poetry by American women; a live performance of some of the best poetry written by women in America, from the 19th century to the present day. Poets featured include Emily Dickinson, Louisa May Alcott, Sara Teasdale, Dorthy Parker, Sylvia Plath, Lisa Zaran, Erica Jong, Sharon Esther Lampert and Maya Angelou.

Amnesty International’s ‘Celebrating Freedom of Expression’

For Refugee Week 2011 well-known authors stand in solidarity with writers who have had their right to freedom of expression violated and suffered persecution as a result of openly sharing their writing, thoughts and opinions. Today’s event celebrates the courage of individuals who have had to flee their own countries because of that persecution, and the issues facing refugees and asylum seekers in Scotland today. An Amnesty International event supported by Glasgow Women’s Library.

West End Women’s Heritage Silent Walk

Step One: Download the West End Women’s Heritage Podcast here
Step Two: Take your MP3 player, iPod, phone, or whatever device you have the walk saved on, and a set of head phones, and gather outside the Kelvingrove Art Gallery at 2pm on Sunday 19 June 2011.
Step Three: Follow the walk at your own pace, taking in each stop and meeting up with the group at various points along the way.
Step Four: Meet the stars of the podcast for coffee and questions at Kelvingrove Art Gallery from 3.30pm onwards.

Modern Slavery and its Impact on Women

It is estimated there are 100 million modern slaves in India today. 3 million are enslaved in prostitution. Most are Dalit women. This is the second event to be held at GWL to discuss discrimination against Dalit women. The aim of this event is to discuss, plan and organise how women in Glasgow can support Dalit women in India.

Hidden Gems of Garnethill

As part of the West End Festival join a Women Make History walking tour within Garnethill’s confined boundaries that spotlights the women who made Garnethill into the most exciting cultural and multicultural hotspot in Glasgow.

Feminist Lines of Flight

Artists Kate Davis and Faith Wilding developed a project, Feminist Lines of Flight in 2010 that involved a diverse group of people adding their feminist ‘must reads’ and ‘must sees’. The GWL Book Group is hosting a special session with one of the ‘Lines of Flight’ Marilyn French’s feminist classic The Women’s Room to launch this fantastic resource moving to the GWL website. All are welcome to come along and discuss this groundbreaking novel in a friendly and celebratory session.

WMH Workshop 4: Oral Histories
