Blog 1 – My student placement

This the October

Chilled and tempting

As I walk the nooks and corners

Transformation and hope strike me

Hi there! I am Aishwarya who is a very new volunteer at Glasgow Women’s Library in this quiet and serene Bridgeton. I’m on my student placement for six months and I already feel I’m a workaholic! It is indeed a pleasure to work at this Library. The best part of working with the people here is that it exudes a lot of encouragement, appreciation, commentary, and reflections that make me so attached to my project that each new day becomes a new type of learning. I have had the opportunities to join in other meetings that have introduced me to the non hierarchial way the people work here. There’s energy, dedication and the spirit of working in every corner I go. I get to see so many mothers and lovely, energetic babies with them! It is a family space filled with people who have been privy to drastic moments in their lives and chosen to arrive at this workplace that seems less of a job and more of a living. It’s full of life! And I am becoming a part of their lives.

So, to tell you a bit about myself and my work, I study at Bournemouth University (South coast of England) pursuing an undergraduate degree in BA (Hons) Communication and Media. I’m doing a sandwich year placement right now hence this is my third academic year being spent in a completely new culture and spirit all over again. I already have almost fallen for Glasgow. So my current work includes mapping out the three decades of Glasgow Women’s Library and to come up with innovative, accessible and interesting strategies for improving digital evaluation. I have a supportive team and I love doing the research behind other organisations and clusters apart from the Library. I have been in touch with external organisations and gradually I am becoming more comfortable in this new space of working. This is my very first job and I couldn’t tell you enough that this is my dream job. So yes, many times, it feels I am dreaming. But definitely, I will have loads of experience with the Library and bring a collective change for our future.

I was born and brought up in Navi Mumbai, which comes under Mumbai, Maharashtra – one of the most vibrant cities in India. My native place is Chennai, Tamil Nadu. But I feel I’m more of a Maharashtrian than a South Indian. Actually, scratch that, I am a human being! I will be seeing you soon next month and hopefully have more to share about my experiences within this space of history, movements and liberation.
