From Japan to GWL

Hello, My name is Motoko Hore. I am a volunteer of Glasgow Women’s library.

I’ve started volunteering since Sep 2011. I knew library because my mother-in-law introduced it to me. I’ve never had work experience in UK so I was not sure what to do? I was wanting to gain confidence. She suggested to me if I work as a volunteer I can have more confidence and learn some skills. My supervisor is Morag. I help her project.

My hometown is called Nara, the Kansai region on Honshū Island, Japan. I think it’s easier for people to know Nara is next to Osaka. Nara was the capital of Japan from 710 to 784. We have many beautiful Temple and shrines. We speak with quite a strong accent. Some of my family live in Nara.

Before I moved to Glasgow I worked as a secretary at the University for 6 years. I met my husband when He studied PHD at the same University. When He decided to move to Glasgow, I was sad because I have many family and friends in Japan. It’s a tough decision for me. I love him so much so I came with him. I married him in Glasgow on 28 the August 2008.  I had a small wedding. The weather was brilliant. We were very lucky.

I love cooking. Mostly I cook Japanese. Sushi is very popular but unfortunately I can’t make Sushi. I bought a Panasonic bread maker recently so I enjoy making bread. I love films. I saw a film Tinker Tailor soldier spy two weeks ago. This film was qute difficult to understand English for me. But I think this film is very good. Gary Oldman is a very good actor. I also like making jewellery.

I use Twitter, Facebook, Mixi (Japanese Facebook) and Google+. This is very helpful to keep in contact with friends. I use Skype too. It’s cost free to call to Japan. Amazing!

I work at the library every Thursday. GWL is a very good place. The staff are very kind and welcoming. I hope I have many experiences here.
