Govan Girls

Laura and I took GWL leaning out on the road again today. We were invited to do a session with some 15-16 year old young women at Govan High School. We screened the marvellous F Word DVD, produced by young women from Pilton who worked with Glasgow Women’s Library in 2006. Afterwards, during our quick women’s equality quiz we were mighty impressed that at least a couple of girls in the class could name check Isabella Elder the sole Glaswegian woman and local Govan benefactor to have a statue commemorating her (even though she did have to pay for it herself!).

There was a collective sharp intake of breath when we revealed that there were no women’s words included in the 28 passages from the great and the good that are carved into our 10 year old Parliament’s walls. We hope some of them (and some of you!) will help address this. Add your ideas of stirring stuff by women to grace the Canongate wall at The Scottish Parliament website

Well done Govan High School for inviting GWL to do a session with teenage girls. Some years ago I asked the American feminist philosopher Mary Daly: ‘How do you see a better, more equal future for women?’ Her reply was: ‘Education’. So well done Govan High and well done Adele and Laura.

Thanks for your comment Christine. We’re keen to get more young women engaged with feminism, and it’s great to see how interested they are.
