In this documentary, Gloria Rolando spotlights her own family history, detailing the close relationship she shared with her grandmother, Inocencia.  Through a first-person narrative, Rolando invites us into the everyday life of a Cuban woman of African descent born in 1906.

Through a recorded interview from 1993, Rolando shows the changes that occurred over many decades and her grandmother’s relationship with poetry, nature, and Syncretic Spiritism (Espiritismo cruzado) and Congolese traditions and practices that are widespread through Cuba.  Her grandmother details a time marked by severe racial discrimination and violence against African descendants.

Rolando has been directing films for over 35 years at ICAIC, the Cuban National Film Institute, and heading the independent filmmaking group Imágenes del Caribe in Havana.

Followed by Q&A with Rolando’s sister Magaly De La Caridad Rolando Casamayor
