WL houses a truly unique collection of materials relating to diverse women’s lives and contributions. From political activism, to women’s work at home, from LGBTQ and anti-racist work, to Our collection include materials documenting women’s role in: activism, work, including in the home, arts, crafts and textiles, LBGTQ history, anti-racist work, as well as several organisational archives such as violence against women groups, campaign groups, and women’s organisations. We are currently looking for volunteers who can help us to make these amazing materials more accessible to more people through listing, cataloguing, rehousing and interpreting collections.

  • Training for the cataloguing system we use (AtOM) (Access To Memory))
  • A flexible and person-centred approach which takes into consideration individual needs and motivations for volunteering (you can tell us about this in your application form)
  • Travel expenses, up to £5.50 per day
  • Opportunities to meet other volunteers and to get involved in GWL

What we are looking for:

  • Experience of working in archives or working towards a career in archives
  • A commitment to GWL’s vision and values
  • Experience of working with Excel or other databases
  • Good attention to detail
  • A minimum of 4 hours per week (or 16 hours per month) during our core opening times (Tuesday to Friday, 10am to 4.30pm)
  • In line with our volunteer recruitment policy, we are encouraging applications from individuals who identify with our priority groups or who are underrepresented in the heritage sector (women or non-binary people of colour, women or non-binary people with a disability, women or non- binary people from working-class backgrounds) but please do still apply if you don’t identify with our priority groups.   • Training and start: from February 2023
  • General introduction to GWL’s work, This Is Who We Are: Thursday 16th February 2023, 5pm-7pm
