Hieroglyphics by Anne Donovan

This selection of short stories is like a lovely box of chocolates as each tale excites the imagination but is finished all too soon.
Of the eighteen stories about half are written in Glaswegian, which adds to the flavour of the tale.
The author`s past life as a teacher is evident in some of the stories, but they are generally written in the voice of the pupil.
Anne Donovan writes easily in many voices, including child, mother, teacher, even a pensioner who attends Zimmerobics.
Several of Glasgow`s treasures are mentioned including the Mitchell library, with its brass door handles depicting the Glasgow coat of arms, Kelvingrove museum and its amazing art collection and the old style swimming pools which may evoke many memories.
No reader will be disappointed in this book.
