The thousandth book

The thousandth book

The thousandth book was classified on 1st of August and we’re all very inspired. The photo shows me marking the spot on our totem pole; the top target is 5,000, which is of course only about a sixth of the total number of books! However, we thought it more inspiring to focus on an achievable target while I am standing in for Wendy. The title ‘happened’ to be ‘Literature and Gender’ edited by Lizbeth Goodman. Nothing to do with the perfect title and the amazing cover picture! Many thanks to the volunteers helping with this, Yasmeen, Grace and Marissa. You have been fantastic!

Art of classifying

Classification is an interesting art and it’s amazing what you find when you open a book- two winning Lottery scratch-cards were recently found (for £1 and £2) so we’ll try to cash them in for another 3 cards (you never know!). It’s always lovely to see what people are donating, and we find all sorts of objects in the boxes of delights! Today I opened an interesting mix of children’s stories, feminist books and old cookery books, with a wee knitted finger puppet witch tucked in. She’s Peruvian and is now residing with our Stitch n Bitch group and is named Hazel!!

Donation of Orange Prize Books

We’ve recently had the first instalment of a very substantial donation from Muriel Gray, who chaired the judges panel for the 12th Orange Broadband Prize for Fiction for 2007. I think it’s the entire list of entrants – 300 books! Many thanks, Muriel, I think that will be such a good start for our new look library at the Mitchell. Here is a link to the Orange Broadband website which shows the long list and the short list, as well as the winner: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Half of a Yellow Sun. www.orangeprize.co.uk/opf/news.php4

Event news!

The library has been asked to put on an event for the Glasgow International Mental Health Film, Media and Arts Festival. We are the only organization using text for an event and this will be on the 11th of October in the Library called ‘Beyond Words: a discussion forum on women, writing and mental health’. This will be publicised nearer the time and will be a free, ticketed event in the Library. Everyone is welcome. Also, a film will be shown the following week and details of this will appear soon.
