Why you should join us? We will have the chance to hear a talk by award-winning author Leila Aboulela who has received critical acclaim for her explorations of identity, migration and Islamic spirituality. She will talk about these topics as part of the Creative Conversations Speaker series, hosted by Glasgow University’s Creative Writing programme. Some of you may have already met her when she visited the Glasgow Women’s Library earlier this year for Open the Door!

Leila was born in Sudan and is the author of four novels, a collection of short stories and several radio plays. Her latest novel, The Kindness of Enemies, is inspired by the life of Imam Shamil who united the tribes of the Caucasus to fight against the Russian Imperial expansion. Her first novel, The Translator, was picked up by the BBC and adapted into a five-part drama serial for BBC Radio Four in 2002. A book of her short stories entitled Coloured Lights contains The Museum, a short story which was again dramatised for BBC Radio Four and won the very first Caine Prize for African Writing. Leila’s writing has been translated into fourteen languages. You can find more information about her works on her website.

We will meet at the entrance to Kelvinbridge Subway Station at 12.15 pm and then walk to Glasgow University together. The talk will begin at 1 pm in the University Chapel and should last no longer than an hour.

As always, you are very welcome to join us for tea, coffee and a chat afterwards to discuss our impressions of the event in a relaxed atmosphere!
