My Two Week Placement

photo copy 2I chose to do my two-week placement here at the Glasgow Women’s Library partly because I just love reading, but also because I wanted to learn some skills in reviewing and researching. I also wanted to discover some new female authors and be able to blog in a more serious way, to develop what I’ve been doing on social media.

I was really nervous to begin with, because I’ve never done anything like this before, but it only took a couple of days (and many, many cups of tea!) for me to settle in. I felt so welcomed by everyone that I easily adjusted to the new environment and was able to get the most out of my time here right from the start.

The projects I was given included posting reviews, creating lists of books with feminist messages for certain age groups and writing blog posts for the website. These all helped my research and writing skills, but I also found them really enjoyable.

Yesterday I had the chance to take part in the Read Relax Recharge group, which I was really inspired by. They’re a wonderfully varied bunch of people and we had some fascinating discussions about the text we were reading. There’s something very calming about being read aloud to and it also showed me how much I value literacy, education and languages. It also strengthened my love of books even more!

I’m honestly really sad that this is my last day, but I definitely couldn’t have had a better fortnight anywhere else! It’s been a really encouraging experience: I’ve improved in some really important skills and I’ve gained so much confidence through this. Thank you so much for this opportunity (and for all the tea)!
