We’re delighted to welcome Linda Cracknell to Story Café, to chat about her new work of fiction, The Other Side of Stone.
Set in a Perthshire woollen mill between 1831 and 2019, this evocative book takes an unusual form – part novella, part linked short stories. A number of different characters revolve around the mill, but the central figure is a young working-class Suffragette, displaced from the west of Scotland and increasingly frustrated in her radicalism. Exploring little-known Suffragette activity as well as textile history, at its heart, this is a story of women striving for self-determination. Linda will be reading from her book, and talking about its convoluted life story, which included a research and writing process over a 20 year period.
