Lila Clunas, 1876-1968
“My name is Lila Clunas and I was a primary school teacher with a passion for women’s rights. I joined the suffragette movement in Dundee in 1906. An excellent heckler, in 1908 I was part of a nine-woman delegation that interrupted prime minister Asquith to deliver a petition demanding equality, for which I was sentenced to three weeks in prison. After World War II, I became a Labour Party councillor and served until I was 88.”
