Carrie, third year Community Learning and Development student from Strathclyde University, has been on a full-time placement with the national lifelong learning project since September. Here she talks about her time with GWL:
Hello, my name is Carrie and I have been on placement with the women’s library since September. During my time here I have been involved with the National Lifelong Learning project and have assisted with the women’s history groups in Clydebank and Dumbarton which have been brilliant fun and I have learnt lots about group work from them. I also attended some Illuminated Letters workshops which again were great fun and a way to see another aspect of the library. I have also helped out with some events that the library has put on such as Drama Queens and some of the talks such as The Suffragettes.
I chose the Women’s Library as a placement because I had seen and heard of the work that it does championing women’s rights and allowing women’s voices to be heard. When I looked further into it, the values of the library such as; empowerment, addressing inequalities and valuing all women were all linked with my own and the Community Education degree that I am studying for. When I graduate from uni I hope to find a job in the charity sector working with people in informal education.
The women’s library has been a lovely placement and it has linked in perfectly with my degree in Community Education.
