Helen MacKinven will chat about her fierce and funny debut novel, 'Talk of the Toun' at our Story Café. An uplifting black comedy of love, family and friendship, it’s a bittersweet coming-of-age tale set in the summer of 1985, in working class, central belt Scotland.

Sworn Virgin – An evening with translator Clarissa Botsford

Glasgow Women's Library 23 Landressy Street, Glasgow

Sworn virgins are women who take a vow of chastity and wear male clothing in order to live as men in the patriarchal northern Albanian society. Translated to English by Clarissa the novel 'Sworn Virgin' by Elvira Dones, explores this cultural practice and has recently been made into a film. Clarissa will read excerpts, discuss the challenges of translating the book, and discuss the Sworn Virgin tradition at this event.
