Zines are DIY, small-circulation publications, with images and text, that are self-published by the makers. Our archive is full of incredible zines donated to us over the years by their makers and fanz. Health and heartaches, music and menstruation, our zines are full of knowledge and made with a heady mix of love and fury. They are usually non-professional, non-official, satirical, comic-style booklets made by individuals or small groups, and focus on a particular topic.
Music zines emerged as a vital platform during the punk movement of the 1970s, serving as a DIY medium for the underground music scene. In the 1990s, they experienced a resurgence with the rise of the riot grrrl movement, which championed feminist ideals via punk culture. Music zines provide a space for alternative voices, reviews, interviews, commentary on bands and the music industry. Fostering community and connectivity within the music scene.
Come and see a curated selection pulled from our archives and displayed on our new zine display shelves in the main Library space.
