In the latest Global Media Monitoring Project’s survey of women in the news media, women were more poorly represented in Scottish political news than in our Parliament.
Why is the media so resistant to change? This day long event, organised by the Centre for Gender & Feminist Studies (University of Stirling) and funded by the Scottish Graduate School for Arts & Humanities (SGSAH) and the Women’s Media Studies Network of Media, Communication and Cultural Studies Association (MeCCSA), will explore this question, focusing on “women, media and politics” in the broadest sense. Where are we in political news? What helps and hinders women from acting “politically” in public?
The event is a mixture of academic panels (from both established scholars and doctoral candidates) and panel-based discussion sessions addressing the challenges and possibilities of “Being a Feminist in Public” and “Writing & Speaking Feminism”. Confirmed participants include: Emma Ritch (Engender), Liz Ely (Zero Tolerance), Kirsty Strickland (Write to End Violence Against Women Bursary winner), Karen Ross (Univeristy Newcastle), Claire Heuchan (@Claireshrugged), Laura Castillo Mateu (Universitate Jaume), Marina Dekavalla & Alenka Jelen (University Stirling), Fiona Mackay (University Strathclyde), Lee Chalmers (Women’s Equality Party), Talat Yaqoob (Women 50/50, Equate) and Kirstein Rummery (University of Stirling). The event will be chaired by Karen Boyle (University of Stirling).
