This guided Heritage Walk, the last of the season*, shares the stories of many remarkable women unearthed by our Women’s History Detectives.
You’ll walk in the footsteps of suffragettes, rent strikers, and the first female students of the University of Glasgow, and learn about Rachel Hamilton, a pipe-smoking labourer and special constable, and other “wild women” who built this part of Glasgow, and whose contributions can still be felt today.
Glasgow Women’s Library made history itself by creating this guided walking tour in 2007; the first one to focus on the pioneering women of the city.
For a flavour of what you’ll discover on this walk watch this short trailer created by our volunteers.
And if you can’t make the guided walk you can download an audio version or a PDF map to explore the locations.

*our guided walks will return next Spring. If you haven’t already you can join our mailing list to be notified of the new dates when they are available.
This event is open to all. There are two ticket options for this event: a £10 ticket and a £6 ticket. Our walks raise funds for the Library. Please choose the ticket which you feel most able to pay. We offer the £6 ticket if you are a Friend of GWL. All places must be paid for in advance as tour guides are not able to handle money on the day of the walk. Select the number of tickets you want to book below, or come in to the Library to book.
A week before the walk we will email all those who’ve booked with information including the meeting point for the walk. Please check your spam or junk email folders if you have not received this in your inbox. We ask that you do not bring dogs other than guide dogs along on the walks. Should you need to cancel a booking for any reason please see our Women’s Heritage Walks Cancellation Policy.
This walk takes place on pavements around the West End. It is mostly flat but can be hilly in parts. If you’d like to speak to someone about the walk in advance and let us know your access needs, please contact us – we are happy to answer any questions.
Large print versions of the tour guides’ scripts are available on the day.
