As 16 Days of Action 2020 comes to a close this week, Glasgow Women’s Library and The Daisy Project announce the launch of a coercive control training toolkit to accompany their short film, “Shifting Sands”.
Charting a journey of survival and hope, the film tells a story of a woman in an abusive and controlling relationship that limits her space for action and potential as a human being. It aims to offer insight into the endless cycle of arguments, guilt and reconciliation suffered by victims and the impact it can have on their physical and mental health. “Shifting Sands” reflects real experiences, illustrating some of the tactics perpetrators use to manipulate their victims.
COVID-19 has presented new challenges for everyone, but particularly for those living with domestic abuse. As we look towards 2021, we must address the inconsistencies in our response and promote a more coherent understanding of coercive control and the impact it can have.
This new training resource, launching early next year, will illustrate what constitutes coercive control and how to identify coercive behaviour, encouraging learners to challenge perceptions and recognise the role society plays in supporting victims.
“Shifting Sands” will be available to watch for the remainder of this year’s 16 Days campaign.
Keep your eyes peeled for more details to come about our launch event in January where Mariam Ahmed of The Daisy Project, alongside guest speakers will be exploring what defines coercive control and how we effectively support victims.
“A great insight into coercive control, encouraging and supportive of women affected.” – Participant who attended the Shifting Sands film Launch 2019
