From September 2016 to September 2017, GWL has been celebrating its 25th birthday. This public performance will be a final, powerful and poignant recalling of the hundreds of women who have created the GWL story.
We are offering up a warm and open invitation to women who have played their part (from donating time and books to DJing, staffing the front desk to flyposting) to come and share the first names of the women you remember contributing to GWL. This reciting and recording of names will create an artwork that echoes an earlier performance at the origin of GWL’s history.
The performance will happen during 4pm to 6pm shaped by those who join and participate. We will conclude with a party, refreshments and pizza provided by us, to celebrate 25 years of GWL.
Whether you especially remember one woman who helped make GWL for you, or you can think of hundreds who need to be remembered, we’d love for you to join us on Saturday 23rd to share in reciting their first names and recognising and honouring others. Visitors are also welcome to listen and mark this occasion, so whether you were recently introduced to GWL, have been involved since the early years of the library, or haven’t been able to visit for a while, we’d love for you to join us.
We are active each day at GWL making sure women and their histories are remembered. This year we have been taking time to remember and record our own. We need your help in naming and honouring the women who have been involved in our history. If you’re not able to come to this performance, get in touch or tweet us at #GWL25 with the names of women you remember who have played their part, and help us in our efforts to provide the bigger picture of the history of GWL.
