Readers of Colour | Online
Readers of Colour is a thriving community of Women* and Non-binary Readers of Colour who come together to read writing by Women and Non-binary Writers of Colour!
We share our laughter and ideas over discussions about things like that month’s reading and community care.
We meet every other month in Edinburgh, Glasgow and online.
Book this event to join the online session on Thursday 30th November, 6pm – 7.15pm. A Zoom link will be sent to you by email.
November 2023 | Vampires and jumbies
As the days get shorter here in Scotland, Readers of Colour will be using the darker nights to get into some ghost stories.
‘Vampire’ and ‘Doors’ from Apple and Knife by Intan Paramaditha
We’ll read and discuss these two short stories from Paramditha’s debut collection. Of course, feel free to read the whole collection!
Inspired by horror fiction, myths and fairy tales, Apple and Knife is an unsettling ride that swerves into the supernatural to explore the dangers and power of occupying a female body in today’s world. These stories, set in the Indonesian everyday – in corporate boardrooms, in shanty towns, on dangdut stages – reveal a soupy otherworld stewing just beneath the surface.
The Jumbies by Tracey Baptiste
The first in an exciting series filled with Caribbean folklore and daring adventure. It’s a middle grade read (ages 8-12), and a brilliant page-turner.
Corinne La Mer claims she isn’t afraid of anything. Not scorpions, not the boys who tease her, and certainly not jumbies. They’re just tricksters made up by parents to frighten their children. Then one night Corinne chases an agouti all the way into the forbidden forest, and shining yellow eyes follow her to the edge of the trees. They couldn’t belong to a jumbie. Or could they?
The event is free and for Women* and Nonbinary People of Colour only (16+).
*All women-only events are inclusive of Trans and Intersex women, as well as nonbinary and gender fluid people who are comfortable in a space that centres the experience of women.
