Quilts have long been used as a vehicle for women to tell their stories through stitch. Together with artist Sarah-Joy Ford, we will create a collaborative quilt celebrating lesbian heritage and inspired by the Lesbian Archive at GWL.
We will start with a discussion of the archives and looking at some objects and images from the collection. During the workshop you will be guided in creating your own unique quilt block using a range of techniques. You will learn to use heat bond applique, a range of hand stitches and hand embellishment. After the workshop, the unique quilt blocks will be stitched up into a full album quilt by artist and workshop leader Sarah-Joy Ford. The finished quilt will then be kept in the lesbian archive collection, becoming part of lesbian history. The quilt will tell the story of the importance of lesbian history to contemporary communities of lesbian and queer women.
This workshop is suitable for all women, lesbians especially welcome. There is no sewing, quilting or textiles experience required. The workshop is free and all materials will be provided. If you have some fabric scraps, sequins or thread that you would like to use on your quilt block then please bring them with you.
Workshop Leader: Sarah-Joy Ford is an Artist, Post Graduate Researcher and Associate Lecturer based at Manchester School of Art. Her PhD project explores quilt making and lesbian archives. You can see her work on display at the Pitt Rivers Museum as part of the Beyond the Binary Project until February 2021.
