A series of creative writing workshops marking the close of Ciara Philips’ Every Woman co-commissioned by Edinburgh Art Festival and 14-18 NOW: WW1 Centenary Commissions.
Throughout history, women have often been the subject of paintings by men, but often the work of women artists themselves has not been fairly represented. In fact, women artists account for just 4% of Scotland’s National Galleries collection.
Ciara Philips’ Every Woman celebrates the contribution of women ship-painters in the Second World War, and this series of workshops will explore how women are (metaphorically, and sometimes literally) painted by others, and how they would wish to portray themselves instead. In particular, it seeks to explore the multiple mis-paintings and power of representation for women of colour.
In this two and a half hour workshop, poet and feminist activist Nadine Aisha will work with participants to use creative writing techniques to explore the themes of painting over women. The workshop will take the format of a mix of group discussion, exercises, and individual writing time, as well as an opportunity to share creative work produced during the session in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.
There will also be a chance for women who attend this workshop to obtain a limited number of complimentary tickets to one session of Glasgow Women’s Library’s groundbreaking new celebration of women writers, Open the Door on 13th May.
This workshop is for those who identify as BME (Black and Minority Ethnic) Women or Women of Colour. This includes women of mixed heritage/ethnicity, and both young women and older women are welcome in the space.
