Do you live in Renfrewshire? Can you name a Renfrewshire heroine? How are women’s lives reflected in Renfrewshire’s towns and villages? How are they celebrated or remembered? Since December 2019, women have bringing their stories and ideas to this exciting new project. We’re continuing these sessions in Autumn, with some fun online workshops which any women who live in Renfrewshire can get involved in. A chance to try out something new, take part in creative workshops, make friends and contribute to an exciting end of project exhibition in Paisley in 2021.
“It was really relaxing to be around other women, of all ages…quizzes, films, archive materials, chats..the best thing was the laughter…” – Making Her Mark participant
Wednesday 30th September: Archive film showing
Settle back with a cup of tea and enjoy a selection of short archive films about women’s social, domestic and working lives, including Renfrewshire women sharing memories of working in Paisley’s cotton mills. We’ll also have some unique materials from our archive to show you and read from – need advice on how to be a good 1950s housewife and mother? Or perhaps a spot of 1970s problem solving from Cathy and Claire in Jackie magazine? Enjoy the chat and discover some unique historical resources.
Wednesday 14th October: Bake a recipe from the GWL archive
The women’s library archive holds a fascinating collection of historic recipe books that were used by ordinary working class women. Find out more about the sometimes bizarre dishes that women from the past cooked up, from “toast water” to delicious scones and cakes. Watch a demonstration of an easy recipe from our very own mystery chef and, if you like, join in and bake your own!
Wednesday 28th October: Women Weaving
Renfrewshire was famous for it’s weavers. Find out more about the craft of weaving, watch a demonstration and have a go yourself. (minimal materials required – materials can be supplied if necessary)
Wednesday 11th November: Moving Forward
