Garnethill, where radical seeds are sown

Tuesday, 23rd November, 2021, 4:00pm to 5:30pm

The library's first location in Garnethill, 1991

It’s 1990 and a passion-fuelled project, with Glasgow School of Art (GSA) students in the driving seat is seeded in Garnethill.

Garnethill, where radical seeds are sown: 30 years of Glasgow Women’s Library, Tuesday 23rd November, 4pm to 5.30pm, Free, Online

Still from Bildwechsel Video Diary: visit to Women In Profile, Glasgow, September 1990

Known as Women in Profile, the group was fired by a combination of creativity and anger and a railing against the inequalities of art school and the broader landscape of art and design. A group of feminist filmmakers recorded the moment Bildwechsel Video Diary: visit to Women In Profile, Glasgow, September 1990 [German with English subtitles, excerpt of 8mins 8s]. We’ll be sharing the recording outside of Glasgow Women’s Library (GWL) for the first time.

Women in Profile would eventually form GWL, which opened its doors for the first time in 1991. As GWL celebrates its 30th anniversary we look back to move forward, taking this event as an opportunity to invite creatives working today to explore key questions including – how can radical arts projects endure? What do people want from a women’s library in the future? And what can institutions learn from the radical activities that have emerged from them?

The short screening will be followed by a panel discussion and an invitation to audience members to join the conversation.

This online event has been developed in collaboration between GWL, GSASA and GSA.

This is one of our take part events this Autumn.
