Consciously Rising is an exhibition of new print works created collaboratively and individually by a group of women who met regularly online during lockdown. The group used feminist consciousness-raising to facilitate discussions and each member drew on their own experience. This shared space became a starting point for making these creative works on paper together.
Consciousness-raising was a practice developed in the late 1960s by the Women’s Liberation Movement. These groups were women-only and they met regularly in each other’s homes to discuss issues relating to their lives. Going around in a circle, each woman spoke without being interrupted or challenged. This simple practice opened up a non-judgmental space for women to find out what they had in common and look at their differences. The aim was that by looking collectively at personal experiences, they could reflect on issues within society that were contributing to their oppression as women.
The idea that ‘the personal is political’ was developed by the feminists who designed consciousness-raising. Working in collage, painting, drawing, writing, and photography, group members have used printmaking to bring personal experiences into creative works, connecting the personal with the political.
This exhibition is open to all, free to attend and there is no need to book. The number of people in the exhibition spaces at any one time will be managed in line with GWL’s Covid-19 guidelines. Visit during GWL opening hours.
