This placard was made by women at Greenock Prison in 2018 as part of a Glasgow Women’s Library partnership project to mark 100 years since (some) women in Britain were given the vote.
The project highlighted the unequal treatment of women in both politics and the criminal justice system. Imprisoned women are more likely than men to be victims as well as an offender with statistics stating 53% of women say they experienced emotional, physical or sexual abuse as a child. Women are also more likely than men to be imprisoned for non-violent offences.
