NMRD Object of the Month: Glasgow Roller Derby T-shirt

Established in 2012, the National Museum of Roller Derby (NMRD) is the UK’s first permanent collection of ephemera and memorabilia relating to the sport of Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby. Our ‘Object of the Month’ celebrates objects from our ever expanding collections.

We want your old team shirts, flyers, zines and other paraphernalia to illustrate the remarkable development of the sport in the UK. Keep an eye on the Facebook page for future announcements on how to donate items to the Museum.

January 2020

The Glasgow league was rebranded as Glasgow Roller Derby rather than Glasgow Roller Girls in 2012 to reflect the athletic direction and ambitions of the club and to be more inclusive of all gender identities. Auld Reekie Roller Girls (Edinburgh) officially changed their name to Auld Reekie Roller Derby in 2018.

GWL is a multi-voiced haven for the diversity of lived experience that makes up women’s history. Our blog is written by many different voices and, although everything we share is in line with our values, some of the views expressed are personal and do not necessarily reflect the wider views of GWL. We’re proud to share the words of our staff, volunteers and placement students and we hope you enjoy reading their thoughts.

WFTDA started off as the United Leagues Coalition in 2004 with a handful of leagues under its belt operated and ran by the skaters themselves. Roller Derby is very much a grassroots sport and the drive has been to re-imagine roller derby as a modern and progressive sport.
