Nellie Letitia McClung, 1873-1951
“I am Nellie Letitia McClung and I was a Canadian suffragette, politician, author, and social activist, fighting for a wide range of women’s rights. I was a public speaker known for my sense of humour. In 1927, along with four other women, I was one of “The Famous Five” who launched a case contending that women could be “qualified persons” eligible to sit in the Senate. The petition was successful, clearing the way for women to enter politics in Canada.”
