For young girls growing up in our society, it is important they know how valued they are in the world and read books where females are strong, central characters to the stories. It is also important that there are seen to be female authors on the shelves to inspire young girls to read them or to take up writing or illustrating themselves.
This week we’re looking at the theme of Adventure, suggesting some books from our collection and seeking donations which we can add to the lending library.
The books chosen to promote this theme and that are available in the library are:
- What can Rabbit Hear? By Lucy Cousins (ages 2-5)
- Are we there yet? By Alison Lester (ages 3-5)
- The Borrowers by Mary Norton (ages 7-10)
- The Famous Five by Enid Blyton (ages 8-12)
- The secret Garden by Frances Hogson Burnett (ages 9-12)
- The Hunger Games– Suzanne Collins (young women)
- Coram Boy by Jamila Gavin (young women)

The books we would like to add to our collection on adventure are:
- The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beartix Potter (ages 2-5)
- Curious George by Margaret Rey (ages 4-8)
- Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll (ages 6-9)
- Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson (ages 9-12)
- Aruna’s Journeys by Jyotsna Sreenivasan (ages 10-14)
- Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard (young women)
If you’d like to donate any of these books, we’d be absolutely delighted!
Any other books centred around strong female characters and books written by women would be very welcome in our collection. Please get in touch if you have any suggestions.
