My name is Jenny Kelly and I have been volunteering at Glasgow Women’s Library since December 2012. I got involved with GWL through my employment officer at Momentum Scotland; that I attended before coming here.
I enjoy working at the library because I get to try new things and learn more about the past, I also like reading books and writing. Some of the things I have helped with since I’ve been here is Jus Suffragii, an archive about the suffragettes and all the things they done to get women the right to vote, I enjoyed working with this archive because I like History and I learned a load about how hard women fought in those days and they didn’t give up until they achieved what they wanted. I have also been involved in the illuminated letters a project where you write a letter to a woman who you think is inspirational, I have written three or four. I also helped out with badge making, the badge maker was difficult to use at first but once I’d done the first time it was easy. Sometimes I get the opportunity to write book reviews, I have done one so far and have borrowed another book so when I’ve finished reading it I will write a review for it.
I like volunteering because it gets you out of the house for a while and you can try things that you’ve never done before and there’s always a chance to meet new people and gain confidence.
