Yep! The first ever Book Week Scotland has launched and it includes some amazing events with Glasgow Women’s Library – all free too!
First up we have our Guerilla Writing Event tomorrow (Tuesday) in Bridgeton. I’ll be roaming the streets along with authors Sue Reid Sexton and Helen Fitzgerald. We’ll be armed only with our trusty, quick-fire pens and waterproof notebooks. Our mission? To pounce on unsuspecting passers-by and hold them to ransom until they write a wee story or poem for us. (To be honest, whenever I’m standing at a bus stop Glasgow folk always tell me the story of their lives. It will be limiting them to the 5 minutes that will be hard!) Pray for sunshine. There’s nothing worse than a soggy poem.
In the evening we’ll be flocking to Bridgeton Community Learning Centre to hear two brilliant Glasgow authors, Anne Donovan and Karen Campbell, talk along with artist Jacki Parry about their contributions to the 21 Revolutions project.
But that’s not all! Thursday lunchtime you can Unwind with a Book in GWL from 12 – 2pm. Bring a bite of lunch and join in the book-talk. Perfect for those wondering what to read next or who just love talking about books.
On Thursday evening (6 – 7.30pm) I’ll be joining our librarian Wendy Kirk, authors Laura Marney and Helen Fitzgerald for the Dragon’s Pen event at Bridgeton Library on Landressy Street. Just two minutes walk from Bridgeton Station, the place which will soon be our new home. It will be lots of fun – and informative too if you’ve ever thought of being a writer. Lots of helpful advice will be shared.
With such a busy week Friday’s Reading Hour at GWL is the perfect way to finish up. Come along for 11 am, choose a book from the great range on the shelves, and join our staff and other readers for an hour of perfect reading, punctuated only by the occasional sipping of tea or coffee, the delicate crunching of the odd biscuit. While you’re there, I’ll be in Greenock Women’s Prison encouraging women to write their own stories too.
So no excuses. Surely there’s something for everyone there? But if not, or if you’re not near Glasgow, do check out Book Week Scotland too. A great opportunity to indulge in books and reading.
