Jackie Kay and Suzanne Bonnar bring the house down again

We were lucky enough to have Jackie Kay and Suzanne Bonnar at the library last night.
Jackie was launching her new book Red Dust Road, and entertained about 100 of us with her inimitable warmth and humour. In Red Dust Road, she tells about her very personal journey to trace and find her birth parents. Listening to Jackie read aloud is a real pleasure. She has the ability to make you laugh raucously and then in the next sentence, bring tears to your eyes. At times her writing is so unbelievably poignant. Listening to her describe her family’s holidays around Scotland was so unexpectedly moving.

Then listening to Suzanne sing – wow! What a voice! She managed to create such an amazing, intimate atmosphere. We were all spellbound.

We did a roaring trade selling Red Dust Road, and Jackie was kind enough to do some book signing afterwards (resulting in a big queue!). For the first time ever I was brave enough to get a book signed for my wonderful Mum, who was delighted. Although a bookworm, she’s not read any of Jackie’s books, so she’s in for a treat. And so am I, as I’m first on the list to borrow it. Thanks so much to Jackie and Suzanne for being such great supporters of GWL.
