Women get walking

If you work with a women’s group or are part of a group that might be interested in developing a walk for women anywhere in Scotland, whether it may be a women’s history walk or a group focussed on walking for health, wellbeing or fun then GWL, in partnership with Paths for All, has an exciting event coming up for you on 23rd March 2010.

Full information and booking forms for this event can now be found on the One Small Step page.

The event, which will take place at the Mitchell Library, will be an informative and inspirational day for women of all ages and backgrounds who want to find out more about developing walks for women.

Walking is increasingly being recognised as an inclusive and cost effective way to increase confidence and social contacts and improve physical and mental health. Glasgow Women’s Library and Paths for All have found that combining walking with women’s history or other interests such as the environment, nature or art has engaged more women to become active.

At this event we will share ideas and experiences on how developing walks that combine different elements can encourage more participation.

We are particularly keen to encourage women who work with Black and Minority Ethnic and Adult Literacy learners to participate and will also explore at the event how to make existing and new groups more accessible.

Glasgow Women’s Library has organised a number of successful women’s heritage walks in Glasgow and now supports groups across Scotland in developing women’s heritage walks.

Paths for All is the national charity promoting walking for health and the development of a multi-use path network in Scotland. It is the leading national organisation promoting the health benefits of walking and supporting people in walking for health.

The day will include:

  • Keynote Speaker
  • Launch of GWL’s new training DVD which encourages hard to reach women into becoming heritage walk guides
  • Workshops including developing walks for BME women, walks for ALN women, funding and resourcing a walk
  • Walking for special interest groups
  • Sample lunchtime walks

The event is free of charge and a buffet lunch will be served. If you would like to find out more or want to register for the event, please contact us.
