So, how many women does it take to change the face of comedy?
I was adding all our Autumn Lifelong Learning events to the Women’s Library facebook page when my friend Susan posted a link to an article on the Times website which answered that very question.
Being a fan of comedy, and a fan of women, I went straight to the site (it was sort of work related after all!) and read about a really inspiring protest at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where women comedians gathered on the steps of the Bosco Theatre for a group photograph to make a statement about sexism in comedy and show the real faces of comedy, which is generally a field dominated by men.
Not only were there 80 women at the protest, but there are 250+ women comedians who have joined the related facebook group, showing that women are funny after all (phew!) and proud to Stand Up with the male comedians at the Fringe.
This has inspired me to look again at the idea of women in comedy, the history, current issues and the future. I feel another course idea coming on for after the move to the Mitchell….
A huge well done to Susan Calman for organising this.
