Does advertising rule our world? How does family affect women’s lives and how they have changed? How is mental health viewed by society as a whole?
Stow College and Glasgow Women’s Library are offering the opportunity to study a part time Introduction to Social Science and Care course from January to June 2009, based at Glasgow Women’s Library. The classes are women-only and are suitable for women who have few or no academic qualifications. The Library offers a friendly, supportive space for those returning to education and study support from the GWL staff and volunteers is available.
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 1pm to 3pm, January – June 2009
The course includes the following modules:
Sociology
This unit looks at different theories of society, focusing on the family and the mass media. We will start by thinking about what families are; how they affect women’s lives, and how they’ve changed; on the mass media, we’ll think about whether the media affects how we think – does advertising rule our world?
Mental Health Care
We look at what mental health is, how mental health problems are treated, and the support available for those who have mental health problems or who care for those with mental health problems, as well as how mental health is viewed by society as a whole.
Local Investigations
This unit gives you the chance to turn detective, and study something of interest to you in the Glasgow area. This could be a local issue which affects your community, a topical issue affecting the city, or something from Glasgow’s past? Tutors and Glasgow Women’s Library staff will be on hand to help with ideas and inspiration, and the unit will help you to develop skills in planning, communications and working with others, as well as learning more about your chosen topic.
If you receive benefits, pension credit or Working Families Tax Credit, you should receive a full fee wavier for the course and can also apply for help with the cost of childcare. This course can lead on to a range of full or part time courses in Women’s Studies, Care or Social Sciences, starting in August 2009.
Come along to the information session on Wednesday 28 January at 1pm to find out more. To register your interest please contact Laura at the Library.
