Celebrating the Voices of Migrant Women

She Settles in the Shields book cover, featuring a black and white photo of a mother and two children.

Published by Glasgow Women’s Library in 2011, She Settles in the Shields is a powerful oral history collection that honours the lives and stories of migrant women who made their homes in Pollokshields, Glasgow. This landmark publication acknowledges the challenges and triumphs of these women, who in their own words, share their journeys filled with hope, isolation, warm welcomes, cold weather, and the struggles for acceptance amidst experiences of racism.

Through this book, readers are invited to witness the vibrant contributions these women have made to the Pollokshields community, as well as the major societal and cultural changes they have seen over time. Their testimonies reveal not only personal stories but also the collective spirit of resilience, adaptation, and cultural exchange.

Accompanying the publication is a travelling exhibition, offering an immersive experience that brings their voices to life.

Available to borrow from Glasgow Women’s Library and Glasgow Libraries.

Celebrating 10 Years with the Sequel

In 2021, we proudly marked the 10th anniversary of this project with ‘She Settles in the Shields: the Sequel’. This continuation delves into the intergenerational stories of second and third-generation migrant women, exploring how their evolving identities and experiences are shaped by the rich heritage passed down from their mothers and grandmothers. As their stories unfold, the sequel highlights how cultural roots, identity, and community continue to thrive and adapt in modern-day Pollokshields and Glasgow.
