Glasgow Women’s Library’s handling collection is a fantastic and accessible resource for groups and individuals to learn more about the stored materials in our archive and museum, and about women’s issues, campaigns and achievements.
The handling collection is mostly made up of duplicate material from the accredited museum and archive collections. The Women’s Suffrage handling box contains replica items due to the scarcity of original material from this period. Using duplicates, copies and facsimiles means that the contents of our handling boxes can be used and handled regularly, while original material is safely preserved for the future.
Each handling box is themed, providing a good overview of the wide variety of women’s subjects and issues represented across our collections:
- Abortion Rights Activism
- Activist Materials, including the Peace Movement
- Arts, Crafts & Textiles, including Knitting Patterns
- Feminist Publications & Periodicals
- Girls’ Books & Annuals
- History of GWL
- LGBTQ+
- Protest Placards – Trans & Abortion Rights
- Roller Derby
- Sport & Leisure
- Women’s Suffrage
- Work & Labour, including Housework
Our handling boxes are available for use during group visits, workshops and events at GWL. They can also be loaned out as a learning resource or as display items for education purposes, community groups and other organisations. Please note that some boxes contain adult content and may not be suitable for children.
