This exhibition is the culmination of work produced at a series of art and craft workshops involving children artists aged between 5 to 14 years, with Garnethill Parents Association at the Zig Zag Arts Club. The artists created work about women who inspired them: women working in Scotland today, women from history and women from their own families.
During the project, the artists learned about the many achievements of women from different backgrounds and professions, including Emily Pankhurst, Frida Kahlo, Maya Angelou and Rosa Parks. They then chose a woman who inspired them and created a portrait as well as making suffragette dolls, rosettes and a banner.
The artists participating were inspired by the fact that the Glasgow Women’s Library started in their own community in Garnethill and has gone on to provide support and opportunities for women throughout the city. Proud of their community and its history, the artists are pleased to be part of the history of the Glasgow Women’s Library by exhibiting here and GWL is delighted to show this work.
The exhibition displays artwork made in a variety of different mediums and features drawings and paintings of women including Jackie Kay, Helen Crawfurd, Marion Gilchrist, Mary Barbour, Annie Lennox, Evelyn Glennie, Margaret MacDonald and Mairi Hedderwick.
Join us for the exhibition launch on Saturday 16th June for a chance to meet the artists and hear more about their creative process.
This exhibition is free to attend and there is no need to book. For opening times see the ‘Where to Find Us’ section of the website.
Our gallery spaces are located across multiple parts of the building. Please ask at Front of House for more information or directions when you are here. Sometimes our programme of events, or venue hires, may limit access to particular parts of the building. Although we always do our best to ensure you can visit the full exhibition when you are here, if you are making a special trip out and want to check which areas are open, please call us in advance on 0141 550 2267. We always ensure there is full access to exhibitions on our Warm Welcome Saturdays, and Mondays are also usually quieter with fewer events taking place.
