World War 1 changed the lives of Scottish women forever. On 23rd July 1916 the first “Women’s Peace Crusade” marched from George Square to Glasgow Green drawing crowds of over 5000 people that grew into a mass women’s peace movement. We are looking for women today who will help bring these lost heroines of the movement to life as part of a wider WW1 themed season. Together we will learn about the carers, pioneering front line doctors, the pacifists, choosing our own heroines and putting ourselves in the shoes of The Crusaders. Our taster meeting will reveal all.
The Launch Event for Remembering Women Peace Crusaders; a new series of history workshops will take place on Thursday 31st March from 6pm.
Workshops will then run throughout the spring, leading up to a procession to mark the centenary of the Women’s Peace Crusade on Saturday 23rd July.
A conference exploring Faith and the First World War, drawing on the experiences of both men and women, will take place at the University of Glasgow 20th to 22nd July.
