‘To work with Norwegian Artist Vanessa Baird is an exercise in poetry… Her universal appeal is to present the very intimate, the quotidian of her life, and lay it bare on the page…’ Gillian Fox, Exhibition Curator
Vanessa Baird is one of Norway’s leading contemporary artists, whose rich drawings and paintings are imbued with a deep, essential kind of storytelling that feels both individual and universal.
Originally scheduled for June 2020, I Get Along Without You Very Well is an exhibition that has been years in the making. Vanessa Baird has been working with GWL and curator Gillian Fox to explore our archives and context of the library. Vanessa is half Scottish and her darkly comic, often brutally honest, portrayals of life are often credited to the Scottish wry sense of humour. Her Mother, Maureen, was born in Glasgow and her Grandfather was a medical doctor in the city at the turn of the Century. Vanessa spent a lot of time as a child coming to Scotland for the school holidays.
We’re very happy to welcome her back to the city to mark the end of the exhibition. Join us for an informal and lively conversation that will offer a unique opportunity to hear from Vanessa and gain deeper insight into her artworks.
This exhibition is supported by OCA and the Norwegian Embassy. It is curated by Gillian Fox.
