Immerse yourself in tales from around the world at our lunchtime Story Café, as we rediscover the joy of being read to.
So far this year, our hearts have been aflutter over the joys and sorrows of first love, humbled by the bravery of political activists and warmed by acts of compassion. Stories and poems give us a glimpse into the lives of women across the globe, whilst helping us to make sense of our own. So why not top up your cuppa from our big, bottomless teapot, get yourself comfy and be a part of the story.
From Ursula Le Guin’s ‘Buffalo Gals’ to Carol Ann Duffy’s heady, provocative reimagining of the King Kong legend in ‘Queen Kong’, to Alice Walker’s unflinching spiritual connection with a horse in ‘Am I Blue?’ and challenges to enduring images of black cat familiars and the untamed woman outsider as ‘witch’, women writers have always found resonant and revolutionary ways of exploring relationships between women and animals.
Bring along your lunch and enjoy tea, readings and conversation at this Story Café Special, where feminist animal studies researcher Rebecca Jones will showcase a range of poetry, short stories and essays by women who have chosen to share their experiences of animals and the natural world through their creative writing.
