What: Guided tour of American artist Tschabalala Self’s exhibition at Tramway
When: Friday 4th of August at 12.45 pm
Where: In the cafe of Tramway (see on map)
Who With: Aike
Why you should join us: To discover the vibrant paintings, works on paper and collages of Tschabalala Self, in which she explores how the black female body works as a social and political symbol within contemporary culture.
Tschabalala Self is only 27 years old, and this exhibition includes work from the first 5 years of her artistic career. The works of art are often made by a combination of sewn materials, painting and prints, and show exaggerated portrayals of female bodies. Yet every character in her work has an individual, powerful identity. She draws on her own experiences and cultural attitudes toward race and gender in her practice, and is interested in how race, gender and sexuality work together.
You are, as always, very welcome to have a cuppa on us and a chat after we’ve seen the exhibition.
