Seeing Things trip to Gurdwara and Food Festival

Saturday, 15th June, 2019, 11:00am to 1:30pm

Seeing things

Seeing Things is a group that meet up to see art, performances and cultural events put on by women across Glasgow and beyond. We think it’s more fun to go to see things together, and we usually have a cup of tea or coffee afterwards.  Our trips are always free. It would be great if you could come along!

What: A tour of Glasgow Gurdwara and a visit to a family food festival!

When: Saturday 15th June, 11 am – 1.30

Where: Glasgow Gurdwara [37 Albert Drive, G41 2PE – see maps] and Al Fattah School [24 Maxwell Drive, G41 5DU]

Who With: Iram & Aike

Why you should join us: We will start the day by going on a tour of Gurdwara Guru Granth Sahib Sikh Sabha, or Glasgow Gurdwara as it’s better known, which was the first purpose-built Gurdwara in Scotland. Our usual tea & coffee will be upgraded to some samosas, sweets and other homemade food at the festival at Al Fattah School.

We have visited Tramway several times with Seeing Things, but now we will be able to visit the beautiful building that is right next to it. The Gurdwara serves the whole Sikh community in Pollokshields (and beyond) by promoting free education services, a free kitchen, faith and cultural services, political engagement and a range of advice & support services. Our tour will last approximately an hour and a half and will include a look at the prayer hall and information on various aspects of the Sikh faith, among other things. Please note that everyone visiting the Gurdwara is required to remove their shoes and wear a head scarf, with hats and hoodies not permitted.

As a belated celebration of Eid, the end of the Ramadan, All Fattah Urdu School is hosting a family food festival, which our Seeing Things volunteer Iram has helped organize. After our tour, we will go here for some tea or coffee, which will be accompanied by some snacks from the festival! GWL will be able to cover £5 per person for some food and/or drinks, but if you would like to eat more or browse some stalls with cloths and jewellery, we would recommend bringing some more money (in cash).

We will meet at 10.45 am at Glasgow Gurdwara, which is next to Pollokshields East train station. Bus 3, 4, 29, 38, 57, 103 and 129 also stop nearby at Coplaw Street bus stop. Those wishing to travel together can meet Aike at Glasgow Central Station in front of M&S at 10.30 am, to get the 10.35 train together.

Access: The walk from the Gurdwara to Al Fattah School is 0.9 miles or 1.4 km. For those who would prefer, we can take a taxi from the Gurdwara to the school.
