Seeing Things is heading to the Glasgow School of Art to see a photography exhibition called Observing Women at Work. The exhibition is all about showing us the lives of working women in different places, from 1930s USSR and South Uist, to 1970s London, to 1980s Edinburgh.
The majority of the photos on display are by feminist photographer Franki Raffles, who was born in Salford in 1955, but spent much of her life here in Scotland: she studied at St Andrews, and lived on Lewis and in Edinburgh. There are also photos by other women photographers: Helen Muspratt, Margaret Fay Shaw, and the Hackney Flashers.
We will also see photos from the Zero Tolerance campaign, which some of you might have come across before. In 1992, Raffles and her colleague Evelyn Gillan established this charity and campaign which aims to end violence against women. The charity is still going strong today and the exhibition will show some of the iconic work Raffles did when it was just starting out.
This exciting exhibition tells the stories of women who are not often represented in the media today. By visiting, we will get a glimpse into their stories, and we will be celebrating the work of some pioneering and interesting women photographers.
