Why you should join us: Members of Seeing Things have picked out three of the over 100 events at Glasgow International that we think you might enjoy! We’ve informally named this trip ‘Day of the Dead’, and you are welcome to join us for all or any of the three exciting parts of this all-day extravaganza! Just let us know when booking which bit(s) you’d like to come along for.

Part 1: Audio tour of Calton Burial Ground, called ‘Saturday’

Friday 27th of April, 9.45 – 11. Meet at GWL.

Calton Burial Ground is the memorial cemetery to local workers killed by troops in the Calton Weavers Strike.  It sits on Abercromby Street, formely known as ‘Witch Loan’, as the road was believed to be bewitched. We’ll be giving a tour of the burial ground, which looks at the relationship between popular uprisings and witch scares. Please be aware that this part of the trip will be outdoors (we are hoping for sunshine) and Glasgow International have listed it as ‘partially accessible’.  We understand this to mean that there is a short pathway but some of the trip will take place on bumpy grass, so we’ll need to take care when visiting the site.

After this part of the trip, we’ll be heading back to GWL for a cup of tea before moving on to…

Part 2: Not Dead Yet

Friday 27th of April. 11.30 – 13.30. Meet us at GWL at 11.30 if you haven’t already joined us for part 1.

Female collective XsexCentenary present a celebration of life and commemoration of woman at their One Stop Memorial Shop.  The ‘shop’ is a collective environment for XsexCentenary and the public to share their experiences of loss and mourning through creating a shrine to the dead, made up of things like books, images, objects, and artworks. We will be getting an artists’ tour of the exhibition, starting at 12pm.

Part 3: Glove-Poppet Effigy Making Workshop

Friday 27th of April, after our tour of Not Dead Yet. 13.45 – 16.00. If you haven’t already joined us, meet us at Ladywell Business Centre at 13.45.

If you’ve ever experienced a loss, whether of a loved one, a pair of shoes, or even a set of beliefs, this workshop will help you personify and channel your grief, love, or anger by making an effigy. Hosted by artist and educator Naomi Garriock, the Glove-Poppet Effigy making session mixes the historic Scottish poppet – a small figure of a human being used in sorcery and witchcraft – and puppet making to offer a fun and irreverent approach to death and the loss of ideas, objects and animals.

We will be meeting for Part 1 at GWL at 9.45; for Part 2 at GWL at 11.30; and for Part 3 at Ladywell Business Centre at 13.45.  We would love for your to join us for one, two or all three of the events!
