What: Meet Jasleend Kaur in conversation with Ruth Ewan, followed by a screening of some of Kaur’s short films
When: Saturday 3rd of March, 13:45 – 16:00
Where: Glasgow Women’s Library, Landressy Street
Who with: Nicola and Gabrielle
Why you should join us: Jasleen Kaur lives in London, but is originally from Glasgow, so we’re thrilled to have this chance to see some of her work as well as hear directly from her as part of the From Glasgow Women’s Library series.
Jasleen Kaur’s art looks at how social histories become embedded in the objects around us. The objects she creates are based on how we live and behave, rather than on what we think is expected of us. She sees herself as a cobbler, bringing together all kinds of different knowledge and ideas.
This Seeing Things trip is made up of two events from the GWL programme: the first is Talking About Making: Objects, Museums and Feminist Memory. From 2-3pm, Kaur will be in conversation with Ruth Ewan, a Glasgow-based artist whose work has looked at social movements, grassroots protests, and radical and utopian thought.
The second event is Films by Jasleen Kaur. From 3-4pm, we’ll be seeing some of Kaur’s short films, which look at social histories, objects, and cooking, all in connection with her new souvenir recipe book for GWL. This recipe book is part of the From Glasgow Women’s Library series, an initiative to create souvenirs to celebrate women’s history. The initiative is part of Craft Scotland‘s ‘Meet Your Maker’ programme,in collaboration with design curators, Panel.
