We have very kindly been offered some free tickets to Jackie Kay’s talk at the upcoming Aye Write Book Festival, so we’re very excited to invite you to this Seeing Things trip.
What: Jackie Kay at Aye Write Book Festival
When: 17th March, 4.30 – 6.30 PM
Where: Mitchell Library, we will meet at the front desk just at the main entrance.
Who with: Aike
Why you should join us: Jackie Kay is the Scottish Makar, or Scottish National poet, and her writing is absolutely wonderful. She’s a fantastic and engaging speaker too. This talk is linked to her new book of poetry, called Bantam, which is her first collection since becoming Scottish Makar.
The poetry in Bantam is celebrating the things that connect us as people, but is also about that which divides us. Some poems are linked to recent political events, others are about something Jackie calls the fighting spirit. Some are about the Scottish landscape, and again others go back in history to the time the Bronte’s were living. According to the Aye Write website, all of the poems ‘send daylight into the dark that threatens to overwhelm us – and could not be more necessary to the times in which we live.’
As always, after the talk we’ll have a cup of tea or coffee on the women’s library.
