In Spring 2016 a series of workshops held at the Glasgow Women’s Library ‘Palestinian Embroidery; Empowering Women and Strengthening Communities’ explored the multifaceted identity of textiles, with a focus on domestic textile crafts passed down through generations of women, for example, embroidery in the West Bank and Gaza and knitting traditions in Scotland. The project aimed to deliver a peaceful message about cultural exchange and mutual understanding.
Textile designer Claire Anderson, who led the workshops, now invites workshop participants, and any other interested women, to participate in a special Palestinian embroidery workshop celebrating cultural exchange while reflecting on design outcomes from the project and relationships which were developed with Palestinian women embroiderers living in the West Bank and partners in the UK.
Please note no previous embroidery or knitting experience is required as the workshop is suitable for beginners through to the more experienced.
‘I have so enjoyed this. It’s re-kindled my interest in cross stitching and encouraged me to try new techniques.’ Palestinian Embroidery Workshop attendee, 2016
