The Three Decades team and the founders of Glasgow Women’s Library, Kate Henderson and Adele Patrick, invite you to this 30th anniversary Open Archive where we will be looking at materials that tell the story of GWL and how we have developed, evolved and thrived as an organisation.
In our Open Archive sessions, we showcase items from our collections and hear from staff and volunteers who’ve drawn out histories from the material. This is a chance to step inside the GWL archive!
This event will retrace the history of the library and spark conversation by rejoining early photographs, posters, flyers, newspaper cuttings and magazines with two of the founders of the library. We will find out how and why the library was formed, how GWL managed to sustain itself while developing pioneering feminist and LGBT projects in a time of Section 28 and great inequality for women within the arts and wider society.
Since its inception in 1991 our library has been collecting and preserving the history of women. We have grown from an unfunded, grassroots group into a renowned heritage resource that supports and unites women locally, nationally and internationally. This project, which marks three decades of this change making, takes us on a journey inside GWL, ’looking back to look forward’, as we discover how it was all made possible.
Join us in browsing through our own archive to explore and discuss everything from milestone moments to the nitty gritty details of the Glasgow Women’s Library.
This is one of our ‘Take Part’ events this autumn! (‘Attend’ events mean you can listen or look in and enjoy the event with no pressure to join in, though there will likely be opportunities to chat too! ‘Take Part’ events involve a bit more activity or participation on your part, you are of course still welcome to do so as little or as much as you would like to.)
The event is free and open to all. To attend, please book below and we will share an email invitation with you. If you would like to make a donation to Glasgow Women’s Library, you can do so here.
Glasgow Women’s Library is wheelchair accessible, with lifts to the first floor and the Mezzanine Floor. We have accessible toilets and all the bathrooms are individual closed stalls and are gender neutral. Our larger Events Space is fitted with an induction loop. A portable induction loop is also available.
Find more information on Accessibility at GWL or contact us and we will be very happy to offer assistance.
