In the opening text of Quim, an erotic lesbian magazine that launched in 1989, the feminist sex wars of the time are referred to as a reason for the magazine’s establishment.
Too much had been kept shut away and it had to be set free. Quim is the product of that mood; that urgency to talk about and celebrate what makes up lesbians – our sex with women.
This Open Archive session will dive into a selection of erotic lesbian journals from the 1980s and 1990s, exploring the materials themselves and how the wider context of the feminist sex wars made them contested items in women’s archives, evidenced by post-its, annotations and accompanying ephemera from previous owners. There will be an informal welcome talk, and then plenty of time to browse the materials yourself.
Content note: The materials contain nudity, pornographic content and references to kink. This event is 18+.
